She learnt from 1991-2000, staying at Girija Devi house in Banaras and Kolkata. Her first solo performance under her (Girija Devi) tutelage happened at the Tansen Sangeet Sammelan, where she was to receive the Tansen Samman. She got the chance when some other artist couldn't make it to that program. She is the recipient of the 'Outstanding Young Person's Award' by Indian Junior Chamber, Chandigarh. She is also the recipient of the Saptarishi award by Pathankot Sangeet Samiti. Sunanda is an 'A' Grade Panel Artist of Information & Broadcasting Songs & Drama Division. Apart from concerts, teaching and seminars, Sunanda worked with Zee Network as the 'Audition In charge' for screening hidden talents from different parts of the country for their popular programmes like SaReGaMa, Antakshri etc.
