Dr. R N Sreelatha is a leader par excellence in the field of Carnatic music. Her expertise, dedication and contribution to the music field can be summarized as follows: Performer: As an "A top" grade artist of All India Radio(AIR) and Doordarshan(DD) she has performed in all prestigious slots of AIR and DD. She is a regular performer in prestigious platforms like Madras Music Academy, Mysore Palace Darbar Hall etc. She has also performed in various countries worldwide. Musicologist: Being the first women "Doctoral degree" awardee in carnatic music from Karnataka, she has done full justice to her research through her dedicated teaching and her authorship. Leader and Guide: She has successfully guided 5 PhD awardees and continues to guide 3 researchers as their Doctoral guide. She has been appointed as Member-Karnataka Sangeetha Nritya Academy for 3 years recently. The fruits of her dedication and practice has enabled her win many prestigious Awards from multiple organisations. At an early age of 21, her talent and expertise got a major fillip when she won 6 prizes in a competition conducted by esteemed Madras Music Academy and Indian Fine Arts Society. Presence of doyens like M S Subbalaskhmi and D K Pattammal provided a great stage for her as a budding artist. M D Ramanathan a vocalist of great repute appreciated her performance and presented her a Tambura (Indian Lute). Over the decades her contribution to the field of performing arts have been recognized by multiple organisations."Karnataka Kalashri" from Karnataka Sangeetha Nritya Academy, "Ananya Shastra Koustubha" from Ananya GML Cultural Academy, "Sangeetha Saraswathi" from Bhakti Bharati Prtishtana, "Nadajyothi Puraskar" from Nadajyothi Sri Tyagaraja Bhajana Sabha are some of the prominent awards bestowed on her. The complete list of awards is given in the gallery. Dr. R N Sreelatha researched on "Aspects of Manodharma in Carnatic Music" which earned her PhD from the University of Mysore. She started her teaching career as a lecturer and went on to become the Principal of University College of Fine Atrs, Mysore University. During her teaching career she has guided multiple students as their doctoral guide. She has authored 13 books on carnatic classical music and has published numerous articles in noted journals and publications. Her lecture demonstrations and workshops are hugely popular both in India and abroad. She has the distinction of conducting over 100 workshops and lectures. Her vision and understanding of teaching methods in carnatic music has helped many universities and institutions in framing their syllabus and curriculum. Universities of Hampi and Mysore have used her knowledge for detailing the lives of various composers of carnatic music in their encyclopedia. Sreelatha belongs to the illustrious Rudrapatnam family which has the distinction of producing multiple stalwarts in the field of carnatic music. Her father R K Narayanaswamy inducted her to music at an early age of six. She pursued her advanced learning under the guidance of her brother Vidwan R N Thyagarajan who is a vocalist of great repute. She has the distinction of belonging the 6th generation of Saint Sri Tyagaraja's learner lineage. The lineage of Tyagaraja is depicted as follows: Saint Tyagaraja->Manambuchavadi Venkata Subba Iyer->Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer->Sabhesh Iyer->Musiri Subramanya Iyer->R K Narayanaswamy-> Dr. R N Sreelatha. She has also mastered other genres of music such as Hindustani light classical, Bhajans, Abhangs etc.,
