A.V.Anand is a professional Carnatic musician and Mridangam player. He is one of the few percussionists to play Mridangam left-handed. Being the senior most Mridangam artist of our country, he is known for his speed, clarity, neat fingering technique, imaginative calculations and most importantly his aesthetic sense. He showed interest in music from the age of 4, and his father initiated him as a disciple under Vidwan K.S.Manjunathan. Soon he learnt the unique techniques of Mridangam from his guru, and at age 10, he started performing solo concerts.For over 6 decades, he has performed with eminent artists like Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, T.R.Mahalingam (flute legend) , Semmangudi Sreenivasa Iyer, Veena V. Doraiswamy Iyengar, D.K. Pattamal, M.L. Vasanthakumari, R.K. Srikantan, Dr. Balamurali Krishna, Chittibabu, K.J.Yesudas, Lalgudi G.Jayaraman, M.D. Ramanathan and many others. He had given concerts for the royal families of Mysore Sri T. Chowdiah , Maharaja of Mysore Jayachamaraja and Government dignitaties like C.Rajagopalachari. He has trained notable artists like Khanjira artist N Amrit, son of violinist Basavanagudi G Nataraj and Thirumala Srinivas.In 2009, he presided over the 41st Music conference held by Bangalore Gayana Samaja. At the event, the samaj awarded him the prestigious "Sangeetha Kala Ratna" and hailed him as "A Mridangam exponent known for the clarity of strokes".
