Shankar Raman sir was attracted to the majestic instrument, the Veena from his childhood days. He spent his young years listening to his mother Smt. Meenakshi Narayanan play the Veena, and soon, trained under her in the basics. When the family moved from Mumbai to Chennai in 1967, it became a turning point in Shankar Raman sir's music career. It was here that he had the good fortune of continuing his learning under Smt. Rajeswari Padmanabhan, the grand daughter of the legendary Veenai Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer. His intense passion and desire for music made him fight all odds; so inspite of working at Vellore as a Tool Room Engineer, he made weekend trips to Chennai to his guru's residence. Following this, Shankar Raman sir was transferred to Bangalore in 1985. His lessons at Chennai continued unabated. It was then that his cousin the iconic Guru. Bhanumathi encouraged him to start playing the Veena for classical dance performances in Bangalore. There has been no looking back since then.
