Udayaraj Karpur is a popular Tabla player, performing in the field of Carnatic and International music. He as a child, showed interest in playing the percussion and his mother encouraged him to train professionally. He started his training with Vidhwan Gangadhar and Vidhwan Sheshadri Gawai for 5 years. His formal training commenced with his gurus, Pandit Ravindra Yavagal and Pandit Suresh Talwalkar. He has conducted concerts in United States, European, Middle Eastern and Eastern countries. He is a member of Dutch World Music group and have recorded albums with them. Karpur has been a Film Musician and have appeared in many programs telecasted in AIR Dharwad, Star plus and ETV. He teaches Mathematical background of ragas and talas of Carnatic music, at Mallaya Aditi International School, Bengaluru. He has released DVD’s on “Learn to Play Tabla” in Amazon. Music, they say, is a harmonious blend of sounds. The musician perhaps is a harmonious blend of all that he has learnt from his teachers and the support from his family. Dr.Udayaraj Karpur, a blessed tabla player, has much to thank his supporters and gurus for. A string of renowned teachers, helping employers and understanding family have made him what he is. Born in a village in Bidar in 1969, Udayaraj, as a child, learnt tabla after his mother encouraged him to do so. His guru, Gangadhar gave him first insights into music. When he was 12, he trained under late Vidwan Sheshadri Gawai, a harmonium player, and accompanied him in his concerts in a small way. After training for about five years under him, Udayaraj went on to train under Pandit Ravindra Yavagal and Pandit Suresh Talwalkar. He holds a doctorate in Tabla and has earned a gold medal from Khiargrha University. He has performed with leading musicians of the country such as Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Dr Gangubai Hangal, Dinkar Kaikini, Pt. Venkatesh Kumar to mention a few. With the sarod player Pt. Rajeev Taranath he recorded the album Reflections Around Noon. Naadopaasana is the latest album recorded by Dr Udayaraj Karpur along with Bharati Prathap and Dr Ravidra Katoti. He has also toured extensively throughout India and abroad accompanying top classical artists. Based in Bengaluru, he is training many young students in the field of tabla.
