He was under the tutelage of his father T.V.Bhadrachar and Karaikudi R Mani. Ravishankar's style of playing Mridangam is unique and always attracts wide audiences. His distinctive style took him to several stages all over India and abroad. He is also an expert in playing the Tabla. Tumkur is the recipient of many prestigious awards and titles.
