Sri. H K Shyam Kumar is studying for his M.S. in Electrical Engineering at the Utah State University. His elder brother, Sri. H K Roshan Kumar is a software engineer in California. They are giving concerts in the USA. They are also conducting workshops in Carnatic music for the Americans. Two newspapers, The Herald Journal, and the Utah Statesman have published full-page articles. On an invitation by the clerics of a church, Shyam had rendered a Puranadra Dasa composition. Shyam and Roshan are the sons of Keshava Kumar and Shakuntala Devi. The brothers say that their father is their first guru. In fact, Mr. Keshava Kumar himself is a reputed singer. He was an AIR artist during the seventies and eighties. The Kumar brothers are specialists in singing "devaranamas". They have given many of Carnatic music programmes in Bangalore. They have also performed at the Sri Rama Navami Music festival, at the Fort High School grounds.
