About

Pandit Rajagopal Kallurkar is one of the popular Tabala player in India. At an early age, interest to play the percussion captivated him. Under the guidance of Pandit GIrish Avte, he built his basic knowledge in playing the instrument. Impressed by his devotion, his guru taught him the tricky nuances of Tabala, and opened the doors for his Tabala performances. Pandit Kallurkar went on to complete his six year music course , a Sangeetha Alankar degree and earned his VIdwat degree. In 1986, he seeked the guidance of Ustad Sheikh Dawood Khan of Farukhabad Gharana. He trained under his guru for 5 years, learning the meticulous details to produce fine music from the percussion. Inspired by his guru's teaching methods, with completion of his training, Pandit Kallurkar he set up Mahalakshmi Tabala Vidhyalaya in Dharwad in 1985, and moved to Bangalore in 1997. Pandit Kallurkar has a passion for teaching, and his 33 year old school, attracts many students from all over India. He spends his time as a full time teacher, and performs selective concerts for Radio and Television. He has released his solo music album "Joy of Tabala" and the author of the book “Avandh". Pandit Kallurkar is serving as a member of Music Textbook Committee and examiner for Tabala exams, accredited by Government of Karnataka. His passion in the field of Tabala made him to compose 5 new Talas, as respectful memory for his gurus. He is dedicated to his gurus, and organises yearly music concerts commemorating them. Music runs in his family, his wife Vijayalakshmi is a Hindustani Vocalist and son Roopak is an emerging Tabla artist.
