He is born and brought up in the musical environs of Kolkata. Durjay comes from a respected family of musicians. He began his training in 1982 at the age of four under the encouraging guidance of one of the renowned tabla players of Bengal Pt. Dulal Natta. Thereafter he learnt from Pt V. Malviya of Delhi.Now he is under the able tutelage of great tabla maestro Pt Suresh Talwalkar. His continued dedication has taken him to places accompanying artists of national and international repute. Also of being a soloist Durjay has the distinction of having provided tabla accompaniment to prominent celebrities of our country like Pt. Rajan & Sajan Mishra, Pt Budhaditya Mukherjee, Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty, Ustad Imrat Hussian Khan, Pt Bhajan Sopori, Pt Nayan Ghosh, Pt. Biswajit Roy Chowdhury, Pt. Rajshekhar Mansur, Pt. Vidyadhar Vyas, Pt. Channu Lal Mishra and many others. He has participated in many prestigious music festivals
