Mahjong or mah-jongg is a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. The word mahjong translates to "sparrow" in Chinese. 

Mahjong is typically played by four people. Often compared to the card game Rummy, it involves drawing and discarding tiles to form specific winning combinations (or "melds").
